  Santa Eulalia

There are many stories of the origins of the village of Santa Eulalia, but my favourite is this one.

It is said that in the late 1800's the Count of Alcudia commissioned a builder to create the village, containing a flour factory, a Brandy bodega, a mansion for the Count and Countess, a theatre, a church and houses for the workers.

The countess was believed to have lived above her means spending huge amounts of money hiring some of Spain’s most famous actors and actresses to entertain members of the Royal family and many of the countries aristocracy.

The Count was said to be an alcoholic and compulsive gambler, whose fortune was dwindling.

It was whispered that the countess was having an affair with the builder and the two of them conspired to have the Count murdered.

Following their arrest and subsequent release due to lack of evidence her lover left her.

With little money and shunned by the people she once called friends, she died a very lonely and bankrupt lady.

Truth or not, the village sadly has not maintained it's original glory and many of the buildings including the mansion, the theatre and the flour mill are now only facades, but it is still well worth a visit.

There are two restaurants, a small bar that also serves food on certain days and another bar attached to the hostel on the outskirts of the village. Opening times vary depending on time of year and should be checked.
